MIUI 12 IS THE NEXT MAJOR UPGRADE

Last year, Xiaomi had launched the MIUI 11 global version for their devices worldwide running on top of Android 9 and 10. We saw some visual and battery optimization changes as major changes. Now, Xiaomi has announced its next-generation MIUI 12 custom ROM in China. It has been just a few months since MIUI 11 was launched globally, and now the company has started offering MIUI 12 with some significant changes. This is a welcome change as Xiaomi is always held accountable for slow updates on their wide variety of devices. The company has also given out the list of devices that will be receiving the new update, along with the dates for each one of them.

Xiaomi’s affordable hardware might be the draw for most users, but the MIUI Android skin has its fair share of fans. Despite being called out for taking design cues from Apple, Xiaomi has done an excellent job bringing the latest software enhancements, backporting features to older devices through MIUI. With MIUI 12, Xiaomi continues to introduce privacy, usability, and interface enhancements with a sprinkling of iOS styling thrown in for good measure. While final builds will not start rolling out till later in the year, we managed to download and flash a MIUI 12 beta ROM of the Chinese version and flashed it on a Redmi Note 7 Pro. Here are some of the most notable MIUI 12 features we’ve come across so far.

What is MIUI 12?

MIUI 12 is a custom skin based on the Android operating system for Mi and Redmi phones. In other words, MIUI 12 is a modified version of Android OS with infinite customizations options. It brings several exciting features including Dark Mode 2.0, Dynamic Always-on Display with over 1000+ custom animated styles, AI Calling, Navigation gestures and more.

A fresh new interface

With MIUI 12, Xiaomi has paid special attention to minimalism in interface elements. The new icon pack is clean to look at and is fully animated. In fact, animations across the board have received an upgrade and enjoy some extra visual flair.

Instead of popping out from the middle of the screen, each animation is now triggered by respective icons which makes the experience look a lot more cohesive. There are subtle animation cues strewn all across the system interface that add to the aesthetics. For example, the storage widget in the about page dynamically adjusts to give you a visual notification of the percentage of free storage.

The settings pane has got an overhaul with sub-menu elements sporting larger text at the top which almost looks Windows Phone like in nature. Elsewhere, font kerning has been increased to give the text a more spaced-out, cleaner look.

Perhaps the biggest change is the switch to an iOS-style Control Center. The quick settings panel from the pull-down notification shade has been split off into its own separate page. Swiping down on the right side of the home screen reveals the Control Center while a swipe on the left side brings out the notification pane. In theory, it improves one-handed access to quickly accessed settings but in my time with the beta, I found it hard to get used to the new layout. If you’re not a fan, it is easy enough to switch back to the older layout.

MIUI 12’s Super Wallpapers are perhaps the flashiest new addition to the interface. The company has shown off two packages inspired by Earth and Mars related imagery. The wallpaper switches the level of magnification dynamically depending on where you are in the interface, scrolls along with the home screen panels.Personally, I can see it getting tiresome after a while but avid theme lovers might find it an enjoyable addition

MIUI 12 Update Tracker

May 6: Xiaomi has announced the Pilot Testing Program where they have started recruiting people to test the MIUI 12 Global ROM (pre-release build). In the Pilot Testing Program, for India, only Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro users can apply via Google form. The program has also announced globally where Mi 9, Mi 9T and Mi 9T Pro users can apply for the Global pre-release build. The registration process will end on 15th May, at 9 pm IST.

May 3: Xiaomi.eu team has released MIUI 12 EU Custom ROM based on the Chinese MIUI 12 beta build for 20+ Xiaomi devices. This modified version of Chinese build is applicable in the EU region for Xiaomi fans.

When will MIUI 12 be released?

Xiaomi has announced its next User Interface MIUI 12 on April 27, 2020, in China. As of now, Xiaomi has released MIUI 12 closed beta program for its Chinese users to receive early feedback on the ongoing development. The stable MIUI 12 build will be released in June 2020. In the near future, Xiaomi will bring stable MIUI 12 to global markets also. Initially, the newer/flagship phones will likely receive an MIUI 12 build based on Android 10. Once Google’s stable Android 11 started rolling out to Pixel devices, Xiaomi will also work to roll out MIUI 12 based on Android 11 for a couple of devices.

Here is the list of features of MIUI 12

  • Super wallpapers & animated AOD
  • New system animations
  • Perfect dark mode 2.0
  • Improved privacy controls
  • Better multitasking
  • AI phone assistant
  • Classic themes in super quality
  • Health tracker

Now, let’s speak at length about how amazing the MIUI 12 is and its unique features

Super wallpapers & animated AOD

Wallpaper is not a thing to mention but MIUI 12 brings a new ‘Super wallpaper’ option where users can set certain planets as their wallpaper. They even can examine and keep any part of a planet as their live wallpaper as well as animated AOD (Always on Display). Currently, Mars and Earth are only available at the moment but we can expect further planets with future updates. The feature is somewhat similar to Google Earth.

New system animations

Users always get attracted to design and animations in a smartphone. Xiaomi came up with its Framework called ‘MIUI Light Cone Motion Effect Architecture’. This framework has two engines viz. Rendering Engine and Physical Engine.

The ‘Rendering Engine’ allows real-world light and shadow, smooth rounded corners, G2 curvature, advanced interface colour mixing, real-time blur, and dynamic rounded corners all over the UI.

Coming to the ‘Physical Engine’, it is responsible for enhanced system animations. The animations are realistic and smooth which offers a satisfying experience. Users can close an app even half-way through opening it. Hence, this brand new animation experience helps in opening or closing apps according to the userspace. Sometimes, while rotating the screen, flashing or ghosting occurs and this is solved by ‘Dynamic Form’ with smoother animations. Almost everything in the system is remastered with exciting animations like the screen rotation, control centre, battery app, and much more.

Perfect dark mode 2.0

Xiaomi’s Dark Mode 2.0 offers standard dark mode features including high colour saturation, automatic brightness, reducing contrast and font adjustments to reduce eye strain during the night. MIUI 11 already has a dark mode but it has left its users wanted for as it feels somewhat unpolished. But with the new MIUI 12, we see a big change as system applications will have a better optimized dark mode.

Improved privacy controls

The privacy in any smartphone is the most important part. Xiaomi kept in mind the security and privacy of users. Whenever an app wants to access location or camera, a message will pop up whether you want to access or deny it. Earlier, Android 10 developer mode had his feature but Xiaomi tweaked it a little and made it a bit more secure. On top of it, the permissions needed by an app will be shown to you and also the phone usage history by the system.

Also an out of the box idea for Android phones, Xiaomi added a feature where the system will provide blank data to any apps that request to access data in MIUI 12. This is a similar idea like that of Apple’s ‘Sign-in with Apple’ feature. The system provides a fake identity to those apps which can be customized by users at any time. This prevents users to share their original info to vicious apps.

Better multitasking

MIUI 12 now brings better multitasking support. Various apps or games still don’t support split-screen features. To solve this, Xiaomi enabled floating apps (picture-in-picture / PiP). This feature will allow users to use apps in float mode. It also comes with gesture features also it can adapt to different usage scenarios.

AI phone assistant

AI phone assistant is another feature that is added to MIUI 12 which is similar to Google screen calls. This feature is specially designed with hearing abilities. Various numbers of AI-generated responses are there to keep the conversation going for hearing or vocal disabilities. According to Xiaomi, the AI has responded to over 4 million calls and helped them in the last 6 months.

Classic themes in super quality

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, Xiaomi is re-releasing old generation classic themes in super quality along with new themes and a separate section for AOD (Always on Display) for over 1000+ third-party animated AOD styles.

Health tracker

Xiaomi is also introducing the health app where it will records how much walking, climbing stairs, cycling, running is done. For this, you have to keep the phone in your pocket at all times. It will only consume 1% of the device battery. The app will also monitor your sleep, record your snore as well as the words spoken during dreaming. The app will store the data in the device and not in the cloud for privacy purposes.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE CORONA VIRUS

Unlike what you may have been told, coronaviruses are a group of viruses, not one single virus. These viruses include the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). However, the strain which is making the world go into a tizzy is called COVID-19 as it had not been identified in humans before 2019. That is why it is also called novel coronavirus. As a highly communicable disease, it poses a threat to people across the globe. With almost two lakh people affected by the disease, and nearly 8000 deaths around the world; it is incumbent upon every individual to get proactive about prevention of its further spread.

The First Pandemic of the Twenty-First Century

The World Health Organization declared the current outbreak of the COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the USA warned of major disruptions in public life, and in healthcare in the coming weeks. Even if numerically more people are dying of the seasonal influenza, you need to worry as ratio of infection to death is at an alarming 5:1 ratio. That means 20 percent of infected people are dying.

Bleak prognosis:

These figures will keep rising as more people without proper access to healthcare and suffering from poor nutrition — the poor, those without health insurance cover, the unemployed — and old people get exposed. Until the novel coronavirus is contained, the healthscape seems bleak for many, especially as the economies of many countries have gone into a tailspin leaving governments strapped for resources to counter, contain, and mitigate this outbreak.

What Is COVID-19?

All coronaviruses are transmitted from animals to humans, making them zoonotic diseases. SARS was identified as having been transmitted through civet cats; while MERS was transmitted through dromedary camels. However, this latest outbreak which was first identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019 is thought to be more dangerous than SARS and MERS, though it is of the same family of respiratory diseases. It begins as a common cold which makes it so difficult to detect as providers might get misled into imagining it to be a self-limiting ailment, and not undertake any intervention beyond the symptomatic till it is very late.

Symptoms of COVID-19

Typically, infected individuals might not display any symptoms till the infection has settled in. You need to take heed of respiratory symptoms like nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties, especially if they are accompanied by fever and cough. There could also be a sense of perpetual tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, various aches and pains, difficulty in swallowing, and/or diarrhea. Real trouble rears its head when the infection turns into pneumonia, or severe acute respiratory syndrome. In a worst case scenario, kidney failure, or even death might ensue.

Warning for Elderly People

People who have got on in years, have some chronic illness such as asthma, chronic bronchitis or chronic hepatitis, and those with compromised immune systems, such as diabetics and those taking immunosuppressants, are most at risk. Some other ailments which might make people more susceptible to contracting the COVID-19 include chronic kidney disease, emphysema, cancer, AIDS, inherited metabolic disorders and mitochondrial disorders, cirrhosis of the liver, blood disorders like sickle cell anemia or leukemia. Though pregnancy is not an illness, yet expecting women, and those who have delivered a baby in the previous two weeks could be more susceptible. The way the pandemic is playing out, the worst hit are people over 60 years of age.

Watch out for these underlying conditions too:

Cardiac ailments like coronary artery disease, congenital heart disease, high blood pressure, and heart failure; long term use of blood thinners; neurological, neurologic, and neurodevelopment conditions such as moderate to severe developmental delay, cerebral palsy, stroke, spinal cord injury, intellectual disability, epilepsy (seizure disorders), or muscular dystrophy can also make an individual a prime candidate for contracting COVID-19.

How Does COVID-19 Spread?

Like all viral diseases, this one too is highly contagious. The virus thrives on surfaces like tables tops, door knobs, taps, rods, handles, and is communicated from respiratory droplets when an infected person exhales, coughs, or sneezes. The real risk is touching one’s eyes, mouth, or nose after having touched any infected surface. The spread of the infection is not through the air you breathe in; but from any surface on which the virus may have landed. Spread through the fecal route is highly unlikely. Since this virus spreads from person to person, the chances of infection are at their highest when a person is extremely sick, rather than during the incubation period.

A Rough Diagram TO Understand The Spread Of virus

Incubation Period of COVID-19

Since this is still a very newly identified ailment, much of the information available is experiential; i.e. derived from observation of patients. The patients seem to exhibit symptoms any time between three to fourteen days after exposure to the virus. The average incubation period seems to be five days. It should be noted that infecting someone else before you begin to display symptoms appears to be unlikely. The paucity of screening centers makes identifying and containing the disease more challenging.

How to Prevent the Spread of the Virus

This is one major example of prevention being better than cure, especially as it is not known what long term adversities might emerge for those who have fallen ill, and recovered. Safety measures include covering mouth and nose with a tissue, large handkerchief, or even the pallu of your saree when coughing and sneezing. Tissues are the safest as they can be discarded, while clothes and hankies remain a source of infection till washed in hot water, and sanitized with an appropriate agent. Washing hands regularly, or at least sanitizing them with an alcohol based sanitizer after touching any surface reduces the risk of infecting yourself.

Daily Actions Which Can Help Contain the Spread of COVID-19

Indians are less likely to get infected through their food as they don’t just thoroughly cook fish, meat, and eggs; they overcook most foods. The salad lovers would do well to thoroughly wash all fruits and vegetables in running water, and then soak them in a baking soda or potassium solution. Use some safe disinfectant like neem oil when swabbing floors, and other surfaces. Give all your dishes a final rinse with a disinfectant. Pour boiling water on them before use. Drink warm to hot water to wash down any lurking infection in the throat. When it reaches the stomach, the digestive acids kill all infection. Avoid cold drinks, but keep your body well hydrated. Eat your food hot, or at least very warm.

Keep a safe distance:

Avoid close contact with people, not just with those showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing. Maintaining a distance of a meter (three feet from people) is one option. Greet people with a namaste, rather than shaking hands. Wear a mask. If you suspect exposure such as foreign travel, go into a self-imposed quarantine.

Social Isolation Is Vital At This Stage

It is better to be socially isolated for a few days than to be dead forever. That’s as stark as it can get. Suspend non-essential travel. Where possible, postpone wedding plans, or keep the function minimalist. Whether it is a case of countries closing borders; people working from home instead of commuting to work; cancellation of sporting events; closure of educational institutions, malls, and other public places; or issuing orders forbidding the gathering of more than ten people at any given time — nations around the globe have recognized the dangerousness of this deadly virus, and swung into action to contain its spread, before working on mitigation strategies.

Most important:

Stay calm, and ignore all rumors. Don’t hoard essentials as you might be depriving someone who needs them more than you do. If you experience any respiratory distress, have a persistent cough, fever, or are sneezing nineteen to the dozen; see a doctor immediately, and request a screening.

Release date

Season 12 will come to an end on 12 May, with the next season coming in soon afterwards.

The Season 12 Royale Pass is set to end on the 11 May at 12am (BST), so Season 13 will begin around 13 May.

Could there be a delay?

The world has been unfortunately feeling the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and it has been understandably difficult for ‘business as usual’ to continue.

We recently saw that Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 3 was delayed, with Chapter 2 Season 2 being extended for a while longer.

With Season 13 being set to release on 13 May, fans of the game may be concerned as to how the release date will be affected, of if it will at all?

FOGGY: The future is certainly unclear, but luckily it looks like things are going ahead as planned with Season 13

At the time of writing, there’s no official sign of a change in release date. So we’re all keeping our fingers crossed that this will be the case come May.

Update 1.18.0

Before Season 13 arrives, players will get their hands on update 1.18.0.

The new update will bring changes to the Miramar map, as well as new game modes and weapons. This includes Jungle Adventure and Safety Scramble which are playable now in the patch 1.18.0 beta. It also includes the luxurious Golden Mirado.

Royale Pass

PUBG Mobile’s Royale Pass for season 12 is almost done, and the pass for season 13 is coming soon.

The Royale Pass gives players a number of benefits, all earned through playing the game to unlock them.

Great to look at and very sought by players, earning the Royale Pass rewards means you can show off your hard work to opponents you downed before finishing the job.

Royale Passes cost different amounts per tier, with the free Royale Pass, the Elite Pass worth 600 UC, and the Elite Pass Plus which offers players the chance to purchase ranks at a 40% discount.

We expect the pass structure to remain the same for Season 13.

New Map

PUBG Mobile will introduce a new Vikendi 2.0, along with the Miramar 2.0 from the update.

According to various YouTubers, a new trailer has surfaced, so you should go check it out when you have a minute.

It’s believed this is due to the lack of numbers playing the map currently.

Leaked skins

The first new skin is a set of armor that resembles the Power Rangers, available in blue and red. They’re named Flash and Lava Superman respectively.

The second new skin is tribal themed armor, complete with a ram skull mask.

These new skins break up the monotony of previous season rewards nicely. The hardest part will be choosing between them.

Gun skins

Along the new season’s theme there are several lego-style skins for guns coming to PUBG Mobile. This includes a lego-themed P92 and lego-themed Vector.

There will also be a new skin for the AUG, though it is not under the “Toys Playground” theme.

New Emotes

A new emote is coming to PUBG Mobile Season 13 called “Joyful Twist”, according to several YouTubers.

There’s also a new emote called “Shuffling Hands” as well as “Talk to the Hand”.

Theme

Thanks to some leaks we know the theme for Season 13 will be ‘Toys Playground’.

That means it is going to be full of nostalgia and some epic new outfits, skins, and cosmetics.

We can expect to see the new season full of inspiration from childhood toys like Lego, Power Rangers, and others.

Golden Mirado

The Golden Mirado will be a rare find in the Mad Miramar event of PUBG Mobile. The event takes place on Miramar, including a semblance of a racetrack.

This makes the Golden Mirado even more valuable to show off on the track. But it also means players will be looking for it more than any other vehicle in the game.

While we don’t have official confirmation on a spawn location, we can make an educated guess.

In PUBG, the Golden Mirado can only spawn in the garage of Hacienda del Patron near San Martin. There’s a strong possibility this carries over to PUBG Mobile.
